Day 105 -106. 2nd year. September 3- 4. Lay day in Grand Haven due to high winds

Let me finish Sept 2 first.  The Musical Fountain presentation featured Jimmy Buffet songs.  They played Cheeseburger in Paradise, Fins, Margaritaville, Volcano, and three others.  Was a nice tribute to him.

Later a  fellow boater offered to help us move the boat to a more favorable position on the wall since many boats left the wall leaving space after the Musical Fountain presentation.  With two more helping hands it was easy to “walk the boat” up the wall and get the boat retied. Enjoyed meeting and talking with these two kind boaters.

Now on to September 3

Woke to even windier weather.  Glad we can hunker down.  Spent the morning making grocery lists and checking the weather.  Later we moved the boat into the Municipal Marina as I needed to do laundry.

The waters are crowded with boaters today.. It is as crowded here as it was on holidays in Ft Lauderdale where I grew up.  All the marinas are full.  It seems that everyone who lives around Grand Rapids keeps their boat in this area and they were all out in force today.  As one Michigander says, “It’s Labor Day, and we all know that snow and much colder weather could be here soon.  Have to take advantage of what’s left of summer.”

We walked along the boardwalk and enjoyed more sculptures and some history of the Coast Guard in this area.  The Coast Guard has an administrative offices here in Grand Haven and also the town is home to the Coast Guard Cutters in south Lake Michigan.

The waves were bigger and the wind stronger than yesterday, so we had surfers and kite surfers taking advantage of the wind and waves.

Also the beach was just as crowded as yesterday.  Everyone is out enjoying the warm weather- 76 degrees.

On our way back to the boat, we spoiled our supper by getting a cheesecake slice dipped in chocolate.  Guess we will be eating dinner much later.

Day 106. September 4. Labor Day.

Enjoyed a lazy morning with finishing up laundry and pondering the windy weather and trying to guess when it will abate.   Walked along the river front that was crowded with people at the many picnic tables and benches. To add to  those, many people brought their own chairs to enjoy this beautiful sunny weather.  The parade of boats was nonstop today!

Decided to indulge in Grand Haven’s tradition of Pronto Pups for lunch.  We stood in line with about 30 others to await our turn to order the best corn dogs ever according to locals.  The entire menu is corn dogs on a stick with ketchup and/or mustard for $1.75 each and drinks for .50 or $1.00.  Can’t beat those prices.

As we left there were 40 people behind us.  Popular place.  Shared a bench with locals who made sure we knew all the sites to see in Grand Haven.

As we were leaving a large tug pushing a gravel or sand freighter came down the channel and Grand River.   It’s bow was huge compared to freighters in our area, the bigger to break the waves on the lake.

On our way back to the boat, we mailed some letters and Bill couldn’t pass up a No shirt, No shoes No worries T-shirt.   We walked different streets back to the boat and enjoyed seeing the large old homes of the saw mill owners and a repurposed piano factory, all dating to late 1890's.

As we returned to the boat, Gus the Gull had taken up residence on our pile.

Will indulge in ice cream as a treat later this afternoon, after Bill finishes his chores.

Here are some drone shots of the Grand River and Grand Haven and the marina.

Side trip to the Bahamas- Preparations

As we prepare for our Bahamian Adventure, we are making lists upon lists of things to do and provisions to buy for our upcoming trip to the Bahamas. Bill has spent much time readying the  boat for the cruise, checking engines, batteries and all the systems on the boat - electrical, plumbing, navigation, refrigeration and air conditioning.  Sure kept Bill busy!!! We took the boat out to check all the systems and to get fuel.  We had to re-remember all the navigation and auto pilot workings and surprisingly we did remember!! We have spent the last two days loading the boat with provisions- water, food, tools, clothes, toiletries and cleaning supplies, and our pantry and cabinets are full.   We are sitting a bit heavier in the water now that we are fully loaded.  Also Bill has finally gotten his TO DO list down to the few remaining items so he sees the light at the end of the tunnel!! We have researched the charts and guide books and have a tentative pla...

On to Allan's-Pensacola Cay. Day 12. April 3. Mile 35.2. Total mile

Day 12 We left our anchorage at sunrise to head out of Great Sale Cay Harbor. Turning west and then north, we will cruise around Great Sale Cay toward Abaco's barrier islands, eventually reaching the eastern edge of the Little Bahama Bank today. As we turn Northeast, we get some spray.  Crustacean is quite salty now!   Winds are out of the east 10-15 knots with waves at one foot. We cruise past Little Sale Cay we see a steady stream of sailboats going both east and west.  I counted 15 total.  Nice wind for sailing. Halfway through our trip, you begin to see the outer barrier islands on the horizon to the north.  Five miles later you can see Little Abaco Island to our south.  Here is a chart of the area we traveled from Great Sale to Allan's-Pensacola Cay today. The further we travel east, the Little Bahama Bank narrows,  The winds pick up and seas run 1-2 feet. Crustacean got even saltier! As we approached Allan's-Pensacola the wind and sea...

Day 24-25 April 15-16 On to Hopetown and Lay day in Hopetown. Miles 12.6. Total 460.6

Day 24 We had a change of plans.  Our friends who we met cruising the Loop, Trisha and Mike, are traveling north through the Bahamas and are close, so we will join then in Hope Town.   We will then back track a bit to visit Man-o-War Cay and Marsh Harbor after visiting with them. It is a bright sunny day with light winds as we weigh anchor to leave Great Guana. There is lots of freight and commercial traffic today- tugs and barges, large freighters and flat bed delivery boats.  It takes all these to handle the shipping needs and construction on the islands. We trip today took along the north east side of Great Guana and then past Scotland Cay, which is all privately owned.  Next we passed Fowl Cay which is a nature preserve known for its diving.  Following Fowl Cay is Man-o-War Channel with its deep water access to the Atlantic and Man-o-War Cay, known for its ship building and maintenance. Sorry, pictures of the passes and islands did not turn out too well...
