Our trip today takes us through Colonel By Lake and River Styx which where created by dams in the river. The lakes have mostly gores red shores mixed with farmland-soybean and corn, and a few cottages and larger homes along the shore.
After the lakes, the river narrows significantly, just enough room for two boats to pass in the channel with many twists and turns.
Soon we come to Lower Brewers Lock # 45. In the Rideau system, the staff does not have access to VHF radio to communicate with the boats. Boats wanting to lock through, tie up at the blue line on the lock wall. Once secured you can walk up to the lock and ask the staff about timing for your lock through and how they want you to tie up in the lock. Often the lock master asks what plans you have for the day and he notifies future lock masters that you are coming. The staff also is helpful with information about the area or town nearby.
Locking through Lower Brewers and rising 13 feet, we travel the 1.5 miles to Upper Brewers Lock # 43-44 and tied up to the blue line. While we waited we watched 6 power boats lock through heading for Kingston. Completing the 18 foot rise, we tied up to the floating dock just above the lock for the night and took the opportunity to relax.
Bill found a camp site to rest. Couldn’t pass it up.
