Day 61
Got Crustacean ready to travel on this sunny morning i
n Nassau. After loosing our lines at the marina we headed west out of the harbor- passing the fishing fleet, freighters, and cruise ships.
Further west in the harbor we passed The British Colonial Hotel, the freight docks and at the end of the harbor the old lighthouse.
Leaving the harbor we enter Northwest Providence Channel heading 301 degrees to the Berry Islands. Seas are calm and wind light, a good travel day.
We pass the north shore of New Providence Island with its tall condos and homes and its barrier islands.
Two hours into the trip, water depth is 2986 and the island of New Providence Island slips below the horizon, but can still see the tallest buildings.
Three hours into the the trip we can see the Berry Islands to our northwest. The Berrys are a small archipelago, with its islands shaped like a backwards "C", known for great fishing in its nearby banks and waters. The 13 main islands are low and have more sandy beaches than limestone shorelines. Many of the Berry's islands are privately owned and going ashore is not permitted. The only real settlement is Bullock's Harbor on Great Harbor Island. But there is an exclusive resort on Chub Cay which caters to their sport fishing clients.
As we the approach channel behind Frazier's Hog Cay the depths of the water goes quickly from 1000 to 600 to 60 to 10-15 feet deep. We drop the hook just past a defunct resort docks and settle in for the night.
Spent the afternoon catching up on cataloging photos. Bill went nuts with pictures yesterday!!!
We also planned our long day tomorrow to Bimini. Luckily we snagged a marina spot in Bimini, as anchoring is limited and it is a holiday weekend.
